Phil Miller demonstrates the 'Cinch' mechanical bloom thinner.

Phil Miller, owner of Miller Produce, Manistee, Mich., drew from his personal experience as a peach grower to develop the Cinch, a mechanical peach, cherry and nectarine bloom thinner.

It consists of tubing fingers inserted up and down a 5/8-inch aluminum pole.

Attached to a half-inch drill, thinner removes extraneous blooms between the popcorn and full bloom stage.

Growers will still have to use a crew to hand thin later, but the process will go much faster because workers won't have to remove nearly as much fruit, Miller says.
