The U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide $158 million in assistance to state agencies during 2001-12 for schools that participate in the department's Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

The program, contained in the 2008 farm bill, targets low-income elementary schools in all 50 states.

States select schools to participate, and each receives $50 to $75 worth of fresh produce per student during the school year.
