Keeping thrips at bay is an important part of reducing the incidence of tomato spotted wilt virus in tomatoes.
To help growers, consultants and other tomato industry personnel, Focus on Tomato has launched a free educational webinar on the subject, according to a news release.
George Kennedy, a professor of agriculture and head of the entomology department at North Carolina State University, leads the session.
He'll cover several topics, including:
• thrips biology;
• background information on tomato spotted wilt virus;
• the roles of tobacco thrips and western flower thrips in spreading the virus; and
• use of insecticides, reflective plastic mulch, Actigard and TSWV-resistant cultivars to manage thrips.
The webinar will be available through Dec. 31 on the Plant Management Network's website.
Other educational webinars can be viewed on the network's Focus on Tomato website.
The non-profit Plant Management Network is a collaborative effort among the American Society of Agronomy, American Phytopathological Society and Crop Science Society of America.
