The National Agricultural Statistics Service has issued an estimate of 1.53 billion pounds for the 2010 almond crop in California, which drew smiles from growes and marketers.

They see they need a strong crop to meet the continued demand.

The estimate is based on calling growers and asking their take on this year's crop load.

The service will issue another estimate in late June, this one based on counting nuts on representative trees.
