The Canada Food Inspection Agency has informally announced the discovery of a cyst that is possibly golden nematode or pale cyst nematode in a seed field in Alberta.

The agency has begun precautionary measures while the find is sent to a laboratory for evaluation.

The National Potato Council in Washington, D.C., is in touch with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which is ready to take the appropriate action if there is a positive confirmation.

The discovery was made as a part of the ongoing potato virus Y survey in Canada.

The Washington State Potato Commission in Moses Lake says it is obviously concerned about the importation of this pest, but also is so concerned about restrictions that could limit the amount of seed from Alberta.
