Cooperatives in 2009 saw $170 billion in sales, the second highest on record, trailing only 2008.

On the plus side were sales of processed fruits and vegetables, sugar, tobacco, crop protectants, seed, feed and rice, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development.

On the down side were sales of dairy products,grain, oilseeds and cotton.
