Charlotte, N.C.-based Compass Group North America, the nation's largest contract food service company, is boosting its efforts to use local produce—a move that it says is good for business and farmers alike.

In conjunction with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, Compass plans to source 10 percent of the produce it serves in North Carolina from local farmers.

The company conducted a pilot project last year in North Carolina, Minnesota and the Washington, D.C., area.
