The California Department of Food and Agriculture is working to implement a quarantine near Bakersfield after five melon fruit flies were found in one trap.

In addition, crews will be deploying additional traps to determine how widespread the pest is.

The quarantine would etablish a 4.5-mile buffer around the initial trap finds.

The actual trap catch was in Meridian, which is northeast of Mettler in Kern County.
