The House of Representatives approved the Food Safety Modernization Act, as the national food safety bill is known, on a vote of 215-144.

The approval brings to an end the on-again, off-again life of the legislation.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the law.

Although many agricultural groups supported the general concept behind the bill, they opposed an amendment that exempts smaller-scale farmers from the law's provisions.
