The California Department of Pesticide Regulation has proposed registering the fumigant methyl iodide for use in fumigating produce fields, providing several safety procedures are followed.

But that has done little to allay the fears of nearby residents that the pesticide may harm their health.

The fumigant, marketed as Midas by Arysta LifeSciences, already is registered in most U.S. states, including Florida and Texas.
