In 2006, about 15 percent of the food that consumers ate was imported.

That number rose to where nearly 80 percent of the artichokes and fresh asparagus and 52.9 percent of fresh cucumbers in U.S. stores were imported by 2008, according to a University of Georgia food safety researcher.

With the growth in imports also comes growing concerns about the safety surrounding how those foods were grown and processed.
