A well-known supplier of greenhouse vegetables and a relatively new Florida company have announced plans to merge, creating a company expected to ship 8 million packages of greenhouse tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers annually.

Within the next two months, BC Hot House Foods Inc., Surrey, British Columbia, and Greenhouse Produce Co. LLC, Vero Beach, Fla., are expected to choose a name and make their merger official, said Greenhouse president Fried De Schouwer, who will be sales and marketing director of the new company.

BC’s president, Brian Beggs, will be president of the new company.

The merger was driven, De Schouwer said, by and industry-wide need to better provide customers with year-round supplies of high-quality greenhouse vegetables.  The merger will create efficiencies in transportation, logistics, packaging, marketing and other areas, he said.

BC members grow greenhouse vegetables on 200 acres in British Columbia and 320 acres in Mexico. Greenhouse, formed in 2005 when three Mexican greenhouse growers joined forces, markets products grown on 150 acres.
