A new heirloom-style tomato is making its way to retail shelves. The Vintage Ripe tomato, grown and shipped by Six L’s Packing Co. Inc., Immokalee, hit stores in mid-August in bulk and in four-pack clamshells.
Six L’s plans to have Vintage Ripe available year-round beginning in November. The field-grown fruit will be available out of Virginia for the next six weeks, and then transition to Florida for the winter, says Darren Micelle, chief marketing officer for Six L’s, on Aug. 21. The company has 125 acres in Florida devoted to the tomato variety, and Micelle expects that to last through April, depending on the weather.
