The entire tomato supply chain is covered in the second edition of fresh tomato food safety guidelines from the United Fresh Produce Association and the North America Tomato Trade Working Group.
Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh released the document Aug. 12. The first edition of the food safety guidelines for tomatoes came out about two years ago. Industry leaders said the updated version is a stronger document because of the involvement of dozens of food safety and industry experts.
“It is an extremely thorough document, and it was broadly participated in through the entire breadth of the industry,” says Reggie Brown, executive vice president of the Maitland-based Florida Tomato Exchange. “I think it fully represents the best thoughts of the industry, university faculty and the regulatory community — and (the Food and Drug Administration) participates in that process as well.”
